CABE 2025 Korean Chapter Mixer Recap: “The New Gold of California is Multilingualism. Let’s Mine that Gold Together.” - Dr. Edgar Lampkin

지난 3월, 롱비치 PF Chang’s 식당에서 CABE Korean Chapter Mixer 모임 (President Dr. Sandra Song)이 있었습니다. 한국어 교사 30여명이 모인 자리에서 KECLA 강전훈 원장님이 축사를 전했고 이어 CABE CEO Dr. Edgar Lampkin이 방문하여 격려사를 전했습니다. Dr. Lampkin가 전한 말의 일부와 번역본을 아래 공유합니다. - 심지니 

“I want to share with you that in California, in 1849, gold was discovered. It was discovered and mined by the Mexicans from the state of Sonora. They came and they taught everyone how to mine. At that time, it was when California became a part of the U.S. So the gold that they mined and taught others on how to mine, had been taken away. So because of the gold, California became the Golden State. So I want to share with you that now, in California, we have new gold. That new gold hasn't fully been mined yet. And my hope is that with your help we can mine that gold. And that gold is multilingualism. Our students need to be able to gain multilingualism.  And I've seen it. I see Hispanic students speaking Korean, Spanish and English, or Mandarin, Spanish and English. And many Asian students that are in dual language programs, they also speak Spanish. This is the new gold. And all of us have to work together to mine that gold. That is our future as a Golden State. I'm committed to working with all of you to make that happen.”

“1849년 캘리포니아에서 금이 발견되었다는 사실을 여러분과 나누고 싶습니다. 소노라 주 출신의 멕시코인들이 금을 발견하고 채굴했습니다. 그들이 와서 모두에게 채굴 방법을 가르쳤습니다. 당시 캘리포니아는 미국의 일부가 되었습니다. 그들이 채굴하고 다른 사람들에게 채굴 방법을 가르쳤던 금은 모두 빼앗겼습니다. 그 금 덕분에 캘리포니아는 황금의 주가 되었습니다. 이제 캘리포니아에는 새로운 금이 있다는 사실을 여러분과 나누고 싶습니다. 그 새로운 금은 아직 완전히 채굴되지 않았습니다. 여러분의 도움으로 우리가 그 금을 채굴할 수 있기를 바랍니다. 그 금은 바로 다국어입니다. 우리 학생들은 다국어 구사 능력을 갖춰야 합니다. 저는 그것을 직접 보았습니다. 히스패닉계 학생들이 한국어, 스페인어, 영어, 또는 중국어, 스페인어, 영어를 구사하는 것을 보았습니다. 그리고 이중 언어 프로그램을 수강하는 많은 아시아계 학생들도 스페인어를 구사합니다. 이것이 바로 새로운 금입니다. 우리 모두는 그 금을 채굴하기 위해 함께 노력해야 합니다. 그것이 황금의 주로서의 우리의 미래입니다. 저는 여러분 모두와 협력하여 이를 실현하고자 최선을 다하고 싶습니다.”
